Frequently asked questions
Do you work with clients across all of California?
Yes. If you are located anywhere in California, I am legally licensed to provide telehealth therapy to you.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy. For some people it's actually preferable — they save time on the commute, can show up in their pyjamas, don't have to leave their pets, and aren't forced to go out into the world immediately after the session. That said, some people prefer an office setting, and that's also valid.
What is emotional neglect in adulthood?
The symptoms of emotional neglect emerge in adulthood often as a result of emotional neglect in childhood. If as a child you weren't effectively attuned to or seen by your caregivers, or your emotions weren't validated or taken seriously, this can lead to symptoms later on — inner emptiness, guilt and shame, self-doubt, low self-esteem, and a feeling of not belonging.
I didn't experience trauma — why do I still feel empty?
Emotional neglect occurs through an absence, not a presence like other, more overt traumas. One aspect of not being fully seen is the invisibility of the harm that emotional neglect causes. Inner emptiness as an adult is part of that harm.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
There are many reasons therapy could be right for you — for example if you have longed to feel seen and understood, if you don't want to overburden friends and family with certain topics, or if you would like a space to process your feelings and internal conflicts.
Can I work with a California therapist if I live elsewhere?
You have to be physically located in California in order to work with a California licensed psychotherapist. If you are located elsewhere, try to find a therapist who is licensed to see clients in that area.
Will my insurance cover therapy?
I am not in network with any health insurance companies, but if your insurance covers out-of-network services, you may be able to get a reimbursement. You would pay for your sessions first, and I would issue a superbill to submit to your insurance. See the Sessions page for more.
