Online Psychotherapy in California

Who I am

I am a licensed psychotherapist offering online psychotherapy in California to adults across the state. I work especially with emotionally neglected, high-functioning adults who feel alone in relationships.

Who this is for
  • You feel emotionally unseen in your relationships.
  • You are competent professionally but privately feel empty.
  • You grew up without obvious trauma but something feels missing.
  • You struggle to feel fully alive.
  • You are located anywhere in California.
How telehealth works in California

I offer secure video sessions on a HIPAA-compliant platform, available to residents anywhere in California. There are time zone considerations because I am located in Germany. The time difference is nine hours–sometimes eight for a brief period when one country has switched the clocks before the other one. For this reason my virtual sessions are limited to the hours between 7am and 11am PST.

About licensure

I have been licensed in California since 2016 and have been offering online psychotherapy in California since 2020. I now live in Germany but am legally authorized to provide telehealth to California residents.

FAQ
Q: Do you work with clients across all of California?

A: Yes. If you are located anywhere in California, I am legally licensed to provide telehealth therapy to you.

Q: Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

A: Online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy. For some people it’s actually preferable because they save time on the commute, can show up in their pyjamas, don’t have to leave their pets, and aren’t forced to go out into the world immediately after the session. That being said some people prefer going into an office for therapy and that’s also valid.

Q: What is emotional neglect in adulthood?

A: The symptoms of emotional neglect emerge in adulthood often as a result of emotional neglect in childhood. If as a child you weren’t effectively attuned to or seen by your caregivers or your emotions weren’t validated or taken seriously, this can lead to symptoms of emotional neglect later on. Some of these symptoms are inner emptiness, guilt and shame, self-doubt, low self-esteem, and a feeling of not belonging.

Q: I didn’t experience trauma – why do I still feel empty?

A: Emotional neglect occurs through an absence not a presence like other, more overt traumas. One aspect of not being fully seen is the invisibility of the harm that emotional neglect causes. Inner emptiness as an adult is part of that harm.

Q: How do I know if therapy is right for me?

A: There are many reasons that therapy could be right for you, for example if you have longed to feel seen and understood, if you don’t want to overburden some of your friends and family with certain topics, or if you would like a space to process some of your feelings and internal conflicts.

Q: Can I work with a California therapist if I live elsewhere?

A: You have to be physically located in California in order to work with a California licensed psychotherapist. If you are located elsewhere, try to find a therapist who is licensed to see clients in that area.

Q: Will my insurance cover therapy?

A: I am not in network with any health insurance companies but if your insurance covers out-of-network services, you might be able to get a reimbursement. Ask your health insurance about out-of-network coverage. You would first pay for your sessions, and I would issue you a receipt or so-called superbill to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. For more information about this, see the Sessions page.
